Cardinal Tetras

Cardinal Tetras are a beautiful addition to community aquariums, known for their bright colors and peaceful nature. By providing well-planted environments with suitable water conditions, they can thrive and become a stunning focal point in your aquarium. Their social behavior makes them a joy to watch, especially as they swim in schools.

• Size: Cardinal Tetras typically grow to about 2 inches (5 cm) in length, making them slightly larger than Neon Tetras.
• Coloration: They are known for their vibrant colors, featuring a bright blue horizontal stripe from the eye to the adipose fin, along with a deep red stripe running from the middle of the body to the base of the tail. The vivid colorations of both blue and red are more pronounced when kept in optimal conditions.
• Lifespan: In a well-maintained aquarium, Cardinal Tetras can live for about 5 to 7 years.

Habitat and Care Requirements

• Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 10 gallons (38 liters) is ideal for a small school of Cardinal Tetras; however, larger tanks are even better for keeping them in groups.
• Water Parameters: They prefer soft, acidic water with a pH range between 5.5 and 7.0. The temperature should ideally be between 74°F to 82°F (23°C to 28°C).
• Aquascaping: It’s beneficial to have a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots, as well as open swimming areas. Dark substrate can enhance their coloration, and floating plants can provide shelter and reduce light intensity.
• Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended to maintain water quality without creating strong currents, as these fish prefer calmer waters.

Feeding

Cardinal Tetras are omnivorous and can be fed a variety of food options, including:

• High-quality flake or pellet diets designed for tropical fish.
• Live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.
• Vegetable matter or foods with spirulina for a balanced diet.

Social Behavior

• Schooling Fish: Cardinal Tetras are shoaling fish that thrive in groups of at least six or more individuals. A larger school helps them feel secure and encourages natural behaviors.
• Compatibility: They are peaceful and can be kept with other small, non-aggressive fish. Like Neon Tetras, they should be kept away from larger, aggressive fish that may see them as prey.

Breeding

• Breeding Setup: Breeding Cardinal Tetras can be more challenging than breeding Neon Tetras. A separate breeding tank with very soft and acidic water is recommended.
• Spawning Behavior: They are egg-scattering spawners and require fine-leaved plants to lay eggs upon. The eggs are adhesive, and parental care should be avoided, as the adults may eat the eggs.
• Care of Fry: The fry are tiny and require infusoria or finely crushed food until they grow large enough to eat larger foods.

Common Issues

• Water Quality: Maintaining excellent water quality is essential, as Cardinal Tetras are sensitive to pollutants and poor water conditions. Regular water changes and testing are important for their welfare.
• Stress: Stress can lead to problems such as color fading and susceptibility to diseases. It is essential to avoid abrupt changes in tank conditions.
