Cherry Barbs are wonderful additions to community aquariums due to their vibrant appearance and playful behavior. With the right care and environment, they can thrive and contribute to the beauty of your aquarium for many years.

• Size: Cherry Barbs typically grow to about 1.5 to 2 inches (3.8 to 5 cm) in length.
• Coloration: Males are known for their bright red coloration during breeding, while females are generally more subdued with a golden-yellow body. When non-breeding, males may appear less vibrant.
• Lifespan: With proper care, Cherry Barbs can live between 5 to 7 years in an aquarium setting.

Habitat and Care Requirements

• Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 10 gallons (38 liters) is recommended for a small group of Cherry Barbs. Larger tanks are ideal for better water quality and stability.
• Water Parameters: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5, and a temperature between 72°F to 78°F (22°C to 26°C).
• Aquascaping: A well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas is ideal. They appreciate soft substrate and decorations like driftwood or rocks, along with plants that provide cover.
• Filtration: A reliable filtration system is essential to maintain good water quality, but strong water currents should be avoided since Cherry Barbs favor gentle flow.

Feeding

Cherry Barbs are omnivorous and can thrive on a varied diet, including:

• High-quality flake or pellet food formulated for tropical fish.
• Live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.
• Plant matter like blanched vegetables or algae wafers.

Social Behavior

• Schooling Fish: Cherry Barbs are social and should be kept in groups of at least 5 to 6 individuals. This helps reduce stress and promotes natural behavior.
• Compatibility: They are peaceful and can be housed with other small, non-aggressive fish. Good tank mates include other Barbs, Tetras, Rasboras, and small Gouramis. Care should be taken to avoid keeping them with fin-nipping species.

Breeding

• Breeding Setup: Cherry Barbs are egg scatterers, so a separate breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water and spawning mops or fine-leaved plants is recommended.
• Spawning Behavior: Males will display their vibrant colors during courtship, and after spawning, parents should be removed to protect the eggs.
• Care of Fry: The eggs typically hatch in 24 to 48 hours. The fry will require infusoria or finely crushed food until they grow large enough to eat small flakes.
